This video is in fact a road safety ad although you don't discover that until the end. When I saw the ad it struck me that it would be very useful for teaching the past continuous tense as it contains several examples of this grammar point:
- I was polishing the brass in the master bedroom.
- I was buttering his lordship's scones below stairs.
- I was planting my petunias in the potting shed.
Vocabulary note: A 'whodunnit' is is a novel, film or play about a murder in which you do not find out the identity of the murderer until the very end (think Agatha Christie). The word 'whodunnit' is a contracted form of 'Who done it?', which, of course, is not grammatically correct. It should be 'Who did it?' (i.e. who committed the murder?)
Lesson idea: A well-known ESL game is Alibi, where students have to imagine a murder has been committed and prepare their alibis. This is a great way to practise the past continuous tense. You can find instructions for the game here and here
