This cartoon by Tom Johnston from The Sun relates to the decision by Malawi's Supreme Court of Appeal to grant pop star Madonna the right to adopt a second Malawian child: four-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James.
The scene is a Malawian orphanage. A orphan boy is crying. The female orphanage worker offers him a handkerchief and says: "Don't worry! I expect Madonna will get around to you all eventually!"
COMMENTS
1. Spot the stereotypes!
2. The cartoon takes it for granted that the orphans would want to be adopted by Madonna. The whole question of celebrity adoptions (cf. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) would make a good topic for classroom discussion. Friday's Guardian had a long article which asked: what's best for Mercy?
VOCABULARY
1. French speakers should note that the word eventually is a false friend. Whereas the French éventuellement suggests that something may possibly happen, eventually means that it will happen in the end. • We'll find a solution to this problem eventually.
2. If you get around to something, you finally do something that you have delayed doing or have been too busy to do.
