This great cartoon by Martin Rowson from The Guardian recalls Ghostbusters or those Japanese monster movies such as King Kong vs. Godzilla. The scene is London (note the bus and familiar office buildings). The two monsters are fighting it out while the population flees in terror. The joke is that a week of snowy weather seems to have caused more chaos in Britain than the global economic crisis.
VOCABULARY
1. If a country is brought to its knees, it is almost completely destroyed by someone or something: The world has looked on with a mixture of bemusement and amusement as snow brought Britain to its knees (Daily Telegraph).
2. Snow Event: The Met Office has baffled many people by describing the heavy snow as an "extreme snow event" or an "extreme weather event" in its forecasts. The terminology caused listeners to the Today programme on Radio 4 to email the show jokingly asking where they could buy tickets to the "event". (Source: Daily Telegraph)
3. Versus is used to indicate that two teams or people are competing against each other. England versus Australia is always a big occasion for cricket lovers.
